July 15: Fire Restrictions Lifted in Prescott National Forest

Effective Friday, July 15, 2022, at 8:00 am, Yavapai County and Prescott National Forest will rescind all fire restrictions.

Mary Mallory, Yavapai County Board of Supervisors Chair, worked with the Yavapai County Emergency Manager, local forest services, and fire professionals, to discuss the current fire danger and, at this time, have determined that it is appropriate to remove fire restrictions that were implemented in May.

Yavapai County Emergency Manager Ashley Ahlquist said, “There has been an increase in precipitation within the County. Prescott National Forest has seen anywhere from 0.66” to 4.66” throughout the forest. In addition to the increased precipitation, the forecast for continuing rain in the coming weeks and the moderating fire indices support rescinding the restrictions.”

This determination includes the following Fire Ordinance Zones: Northern, Central, Eastern, and Southern Zones of Yavapai County, which include the following cities and towns; Prescott, Prescott Valley, Dewey- Humboldt, Mayer, Cordes Junction, Black Canyon City, Congress, North Wickenburg, Peeples Valley, Yarnell, Wilhoit, Cottonwood, Sedona, Camp Verde, and unincorporated areas herein.

Chair Mallory said, “We recognize the inconvenience of imposing these restrictions in our communities, but I appreciate everyone who worked hard to protect our local forests and homes. The fire danger within Yavapai County is a significant concern, and we appreciate your efforts to protect our great County.”

Know Before You Go!

Visitors are asked to remain vigilant and avoid activities that could accidentally cause wildfires – refrain from campfires on dry and windy days and remember that it is always illegal to leave a campfire unattended. In addition, fireworks are never permitted on any National Forest land.

Statewide fire restriction information can be found at https://wildlandfire.az.gov/fire-restrictions. The map shows current fire restrictions on federal and state-managed lands in Arizona and New Mexico.

Winter Closures on Mingus Mountain
News

Winter Closures on Mingus Mountain

Recreation Officials on the Verde Ranger District have closed the following facilities/roads in preparation for the winter season starting on Tuesday, November 26, 2019 through May 1, 2020.

  • Forest Road 104 near the junction of Forest Road 413; at the entrance to the Mingus Recreation Area will be closed. Walk in access to Mingus Lake and other areas are still allowed; however, all restrooms will be locked and trash services cancelled. The public is asked not to block gates in the area and pack out what they pack in. At this time the segment of FR104 to FR413 accessed at Hwy 89A will remain open unless heavy snow accumulation warrants its closure for public safety.
  • Summit Day Use parking lot gate and restroom will be locked.
  • Woodchute Trailhead restroom will be locked.

Additionally, we would like to remind the public that snow play near the Summit Day Use Area is prohibited as well as parking within the Hwy 89A corridor or along Forest Road 104 and 106 that restricts regular travel.

Forest Officials urge all visitors to use caution while driving on Forest Roads during the winter months. Road conditions on many forest roads are generally iced over which lend themselves to additional hazards since they are not paved and remain shaded during much of the day. Additional precautions should be taken on Forest Road 104, which is a dirt/gravel road that does not offer many places for vehicles to safely turn around.

For more information contact the Verde Ranger District at 928-567-4121.
